Creating Passionate Attendees

I can’t remember how now, but I came upon an interesting blog today that has great information tradeshow organizers can use. Creating Passionate Users talks about doing just that - and if you substitute the word “users” for “attendees,” and “product” for “tradeshow,” there’s some great stuff here.

Kathy Sierra’s post on great presentations is advice I’ll definitely be passing on to all speakers for future events.

Also, there is a post here that covers something I’ve been thinking a great deal lately- why some bloggers get tons of traffic - because it’s never for the same reason. But what they do have in common is that they all avoid the Zone of Mediocrity. In essence, never let your product (i.e. your event) fall into the middle. It’s better to be hated or loved than be somewhere in between. Some of the best and most popular bloggers seem to understand this and even capitalize on it, including Dave Winer and Jason Calacanis - love their views or hate their views - either way they are happy. But when you fall into the middle somewhere - watch out - you’re in danger of becoming irrelevant - and so is your tradeshow. I knew there was a reason I should love the people that hate my event. I just couldn’t put my finger on why until now.

Great post Tim. In a recent blog post, Dilbert-creator Scott Adams phrased it well: “If everyone exposed to a product likes it, the product will not succeed.” (http://dilbertblog.typepad.com/the_dilbert_blog/2006/10/knowing_when_to.html)

    Keep loving your haters.

[...] I found the post while reading this entry in Tim Bourquin’s Trade Show Startup blog. He applies the principles to creating passionate show attendees. I certainly learned a couple things to apply when I present as well as when I podcast. [...]
